Like other halocarbon halon alternatives, SF 1230 fluid extinguishes by removing heat rather than displacing oxygen. Here’s how that happens in a typical fire protection system:

1. Detection

SF 1230 fluid systems use cross-zoned detection: two independent detectors wired to a UL 864-listed releasing panel, so a single false alarm can't trigger discharge. Once both zones confirm, the panel sounds a pre-discharge alarm and holds a short delay for anyone to abort.

2. Discharge

SF 1230 fluid is stored as a liquid and superpressurized with nitrogen. When the panel fires the cylinder valve, the fluid releases through fixed piping and nozzles sized to the hazard.

3. Vaporization

The fluid atomizes into fine droplets and vaporizes almost instantly, mixing with air to reach design concentration in seconds. That vapor mixture carries the highest heat capacity of any commercially available halon alternative, pulling heat out of the fire faster than it can sustain combustion.

4. Re-Entry

Is SF 1230™ Fluid a PFAS?

By chemical definition, yes. Fluoroketones contain carbon-fluorine bonds, the basis for the classification. But PFOS and PFOA, the compounds driving most regulatory action, are fully fluorinated carbon chains with no reactive site, which is why they persist and bioaccumulate.

SF 1230 fluid carries a carbon-oxygen double bond instead, a reactive site that breaks down under UV light with a five-day atmospheric lifetime rather than accumulating. That structural difference is why SF 1230 carries a GWP below 1 despite sharing the PFAS classification.
